No football allowed

It’s not often I get the opportunity to rant about my twin favourite subjects of sport and TV, but today is one of those lucky days! Usually, if I’m ranting about sport, it’ll be about how one or another of my sports partners is completely rubbish, but today my target is STV.

For those of you unfamilar with that acronym, it stands for Scottish Television, the version of ITV that we get north of the border. Usually I have very little reason to watch any of ITV’s shows, not being much of a soap fan. I’ll occasionally tune into Jeremy Kyle if I’m off work, but other than that, the only time the three button gets used on my remote control is when there are Champions League footall games on.

Which is when it was announced a couple of years ago that ITV had secured the rights to show English FA Cup matches rather than the BBC, I wasn’t that bothered. After all, STV were sure to continue showing such a popular and historic event, right? Wrong. Turns out there was some issue with STV having to pay for the privilege of showing the games as they’re not really part of ITV any more. Of course, their being too tight to pay wasn’t the excuse they gave in the press. There they said it was because they believed that Scottish football fans weren’t interested in English football, and were fed up of having had it forced on them by the BBC for years. Speak for yourself!

I know a lot of Scottish football fans who were annoyed at missing some of the great FA Cup games the rest of the country got to see. We didn’t even get the final! Just some crappy spy thriller. Come on STV; shell out for the football for next season!
